On June 13 12:01am (that’s one minute after midnight tonight…or
technically tomorrow) you will have the opportunity to create your own user
name in Facebook. This will allow you to essentially personalize the url
associated with your profile. Visit Facebook’s blog
to learn more.
Why Do This?
For those that have already jumped on Facebook (and those considering it), this is a chance to claim your brand identity on the social networking site. While others can still create groups for your institution (over-eager prospective students, enterprising current students, anxious-to-connect alumni, etc), this gives you the opportunity to protect your brand a bit further.
The Takeaway
If your school is on Facebook or you’re even considering it, go ahead and secure that user name and the resulting domain name (you can already do the same thing on Twitter, by the way).
Next step
Nail down your social strategy for how to use these channels to achieve institutional objectives.
